God Wants You Happy 22 May 16

Sing with us now, “If it makes you happyyyy – it can’t be that baaaad.” Thanks Sheryl Crow, but God never said that.

The Happiness Myth:

“God just wants me to be happy.”

The Faulty Conclusion:

“Whatever makes me happy must be right, and whatever makes me unhappy must be wrong.”

Problems with the Happiness Myth:

  1. It’s not in the Bible.
  2. It’s a horrible standard for making decisions.
  3. It places unfair expectations upon God.

Instead of pursuing happiness, God wants us to pursue Him.

Pursuing God = God First

TEXT: Psalm 37:4; Deuteronomy 4:29; Jeremiah 6:14
  1. What was the happiest time of your life?   What was the happiest day of your life?  Describe what made it so great?
  2. Define the word happy.  The happiness myth states, “God just wants me to be happy”? Have you ever thought this way?
  3. The Happiness Myth leads to a faulty conclusion: “Whatever makes me happy must be right and whatever makes me unhappy must be wrong.”
    • Truthfully have you ever made a decision based on this faulty conclusion?
    • What are some problems with living your life according to the happiness myth?
  4. Read Psalms 37:4.  What is the promise of this verse? What does it look like to delight yourself in the Lord? What really is God’s highest desire for me?
  5. Read Deuteronomy 4:29.  How do we pursue God?
  6. What are some of the blessings that come our way when we pursue God?
  7. Read Matthew 6:25-34.  Troy said pursuing God = God first.  How do you put God first in your money?  Time?  Decisions?  According to verse 33 what happens when we put God first?
  8. Is there an area of your life where God is not first?  What needs to change?
