God’s Choice

Somehow it will all work out. We’ve heard this statement many times before. It may not be an emotionally satisfying answer to our circumstances, but it’s a statement that applies to God’s sovereign control and our free-will. Join us as we navigate this often confusing topic as we continue our study of Romans.

Making sense of God’s sovereignty:

  1. Thank God that He is sovereign.
  2. Somehow, God chooses. And somehow, I have freedom.
  3. Choose eternal life.

  1. During your childhood years when they were picking teams, were you usually the first person chosen or the last? If you were the last pick, how did it feel?
  2. Read Romans 9:1-5. How great was Paul’s burden for his nation? Have you ever felt a burden for someone to be saved? What did you do about it?
  3. Read Romans 9:6-9. Based on these verses and what we  have studied in the book of Romans (Romans 4:1-3), who are God’s children? How does one become a child of the “promise?”
  4. Read Romans 9:10-13. What’s the difference between God’s foreknowledge and God’s election? How does His foreknowledge relate to His election?
    • Definition of foreknowledge: Awareness of something  before it happens or exists.
    • Definition of election: God’s act of choosing those who have responded to Jesus by grace through faith
  5. Read Romans 9:14-18. Who deserves to go to heaven? Has anyone ever earned the right to go to heaven? Therefore, is God unjust in sending anyone to hell? Discuss your answers.
  6. Discuss the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart. Read Exodus 8:15, 19, 32 and Exodus 9:12, 10:1, 20, 27 for further study. Was there a  process in the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart? If so, what was it?
  7. Read Romans 9:19-23. Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and other “New Atheists” accuse God of being a misogynistic, xenophobic, genocidal dictator. How would Paul respond to these charges against God? How do you respond to them? Read and discuss 2 Peter 3:9.
  8. Read Romans 9:24-33. What point is Paul making in these verses about the Gentiles versus the Israelites? How is Jesus a fulfillment of v. 33 in your life and in the lives of people who reject Him?
  9. In light of Romans 9, what am I doing to share my faith with my world? How have I grown complacent about my responsibility to evangelize?
