It Doesn’t Matter What You Do

You can do whatever you want as long as you don’t hurt anyone, right? God never said that. So what is God’s standard?

Three Cultural Misbeliefs:

  1. I’m not a bad person
  2. All sin is the same
  3. Since I’ve already done it, I might as well keep on doing it

TEXT: 1 John 1:8-9; Romans 6:23; John 19:11; Romans 6:1; Romans 12:1-2; Romans 3:10; Romans 6:23; 1 Corinthians 6:18

  1. When was the last time you really got away with something?  What was your biggest “escape from punishment”  when you were a kid?
  2. Discuss the statement:  “It’s not wrong – it’s not a sin – as long as nobody gets hurt.”  What are the problems you run into if you hold to a belief like that?
  3. One of the lies that we often believe is, “I am not a bad person.” Read 1 John 1:8. What does this verse say about this belief?
  4. Another incorrect cultural belief we often embrace is, “All sin is the same.”   Why is this not true?
    • Is sin all the same in God’s eyes?
    • Read Romans 6:23 and John 19:11 and discuss how these verses counter this faulty perspective.
  5. Another cultural lie that is easy for us to believe is, “Since I have already done it, I may as well keep on doing it.”  Why is this so dangerous?
    • Read Romans 6:1.  What does this say about this belief?
    • What does holding to this faulty view say about the grace of Jesus?  (i.e. cheap grace).
  6. Read Romans 12:1-2.  What are some things this verse suggests to help us overcome the false belief, “It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you don’t hurt anyone”?
  7. What happens to us when we allow God to fully transform our lives and we begin to apply His truth to our everyday decisions and actions?
  8. The first step for many is to take the advice of 1 John 1:9 and confess our sins to God.  Take some time this week to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal either the unconfessed sin in your life or the sin you simply refuse to acknowledge. Then give it all to Him, asking in return for His strength to stand firm against the lies of this deceptive culture.
