(Message 1) As we begin this series on the Holy Spirit, we’re setting the foundation. What is the Holy Spirit? What does He do? How do I get the Holy Spirit? Why should I care? If you’ve ever been curious about the Holy Spirit or how the Spirit works in the life of those who trust in Jesus, join us as we answer these questions and more. #GCWindAndFire
The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.
“I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. But —When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.
Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.
What has been your experience or thoughts about the Holy Spirit before now? Did He play much of a part in your upbringing? Why do you think so many struggle to understand the Holy Spirit?
Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.
Read John 3:8. How does Jesus’ explanation of the Spirit explain some of His mystery?
Read Matthew 3:11. What did John mean when he said Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire? How do fire and the Holy Spirit often accomplish the same purpose?
Read Titus 3:3-5. How has the Holy Spirit transformed your life since becoming a Christian?
Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.
Troy said the Holy Spirit brings life and growth. In what ways have you experienced life and growth through the Holy Spirit? In what ways have you experienced life and growth that you maybe have not previously attributed to the Holy Spirit?
How do you think you can experience more of the Spirit’s power in your life?
How has the Holy Spirit provided you with assurance of your salvation? What did that experience look like, feel like? If you haven’t received that assurance, is it because of doubt? Or is it time to receive that salvation for the first time?
Troy mentioned 3 benefits of being filled with the Holy Spirit, one was assurance of salvation (mentioned in the previous question), the Fruit of the Spirit and the Gifts of the Spirit. Which one of these has impacted your life the most? Which one needs more cultivation in your life?
Discovering your Spiritual gifts is something every believer in Christ should do. Have you personally taken a Spiritual Gifts test? If you have what are your strongest gifts? If you haven’t plan to go through the Generations – Step 2 class to find out what your gifts are.

Holy Spirit we want to know more about You. Help us to experience more of Your power in our lives. Thank you for the gifts you have given us to be used by You. Help us to not only discover these gifts, but allow you to use them to further Your Kingdom here on earth. — Amen
