John 14:15-17

“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

1 John 2:1

My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.

Acts 2:1-4

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.

  • Who’s been the biggest advocate and support system in your life?

Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.

  • If your Bible has section headings, take a second to read the headings of John chapters 13-17. What was Jesus preparing his disciples for? Why did he spend so much time teaching them about the Holy Spirit?
  • Discuss Jesus’ statement, “If you love me, you’ll obey my commands.”
  • Discuss the etymology of the word paraclete. What do the 2 parts to the word mean? Why is that important?
  • The Holy Spirit has always been at work in the world.  But Jesus prophesied in v.17 that his presence in our lives would change after Jesus left the earth. How did it change?

Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.

  • How have you experienced the Holy Spirit as your comforter or counselor or advocate?
  • Where do you need the Holy Spirit’s comfort and counsel the most in
    your life?
  • How have you felt the prompting and conviction of the Holy Spirit in your life? Describe how you recognize that conviction.
  • What do you need to ask the Holy Spirit for today? Comfort, counsel, forgiveness?
  • Has learning about the different functions of the Holy Spirit changed your understanding of who He is? How could what you have learned change the way you act and react to your circumstances?

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.

  • Troy shared stories about some of the GC Staff members and how the Holy Spirit gave them boldness, brought conviction, or revelation. Commit to journaling how the Holy Spirit has moved at some point in your life and be ready to share this with someone if the occasion arises.

Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.

  • Holy Spirit thank you for the role You play in our lives. Thank you that You come along side us and comfort us. Help us to follow You as You lead us to speak in boldness. Continue to convict us when we go our own way and give us revelation. – Amen
