Truth Over Lies 30 Jul 17

(Message 1) It’s easy to get lost in the “alternative facts”, twisted truth, and straight up lies we are fed every day. But don’t get comfortable with the lies! God’s Word is truth, an unwavering standard for all time that will transform us as we yield to it.

Biblical Authority (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
God speaks to us through the Bible and we recognize it as the final authority for our lives.

3 Attributes of a False Teacher:

  1. They doubt the words of Jesus
  2. They major on the minors
  3. They use God to make money

  1. Have you ever thought, “If only I could have this much money… or live in that house.. or drive that car… or… I would be happy.” What was your initial feeling when you got what you thought would make you happy? How long did that happiness last?  How does Proverbs 14:12 apply to your answer?
  2. Read Matthew 6:33 and 10:39.  According to Jesus, what is the path to life? How does your day-to-day life reflect His words? Do you need to make any changes?
  3. Read 1 Timothy 6:1-5.  Paul says that those who reject the teaching of Jesus Christ are conceited and understand nothing.  Is that a fair assessment?
  4. How do you recognize false teachers in the church?  What were the 3 attributes of false teachers that Troy shared? What should be our reaction to false teaching?
  5. Why do you believe the Bible is the word of God?  What did Jesus believe about it?
  6. Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17.  What should be the end result of studying the Bible in our lives?
  7. Troy said in his message, “Truth always lines up with scripture and scripture always lines up with the truth.” What is the source of truth in your life? How do you seek truth in your life?

This week’s “Deeper Discoveries” are found in this document:
Question: “How can I recognize a false teacher / false prophet?”

Read through the document and discuss with your small group the ways to recognize a false teacher.

“The best way to guard yourself against falsehood and false teachers is to know the truth. To spot a counterfeit, study the real thing. Any believer who “correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15) and who makes a careful study of the Bible can identify false doctrine.”
